The exhibition will utilize portraiture and ephemera to delve into the interconnected lives of Baldwin; Lorraine Hansberry, acclaimed author of A Raisin in the Sun; Barbara Jordan, a prominent lawyer, educator and politician; activist Bayard Rustin; and poets and filmmakers Essex Hemphill and Marlon Riggs. Notable portraits by Beauford Delany and Bernard Gotfryd will be juxtaposed with pieces by renowned artists like Richard Avedon, Glenn Ligon, Donald Moffett, Faith Ringgold, Lorna Simpson and Jack Whitten. Examining Baldwin within the framework of his community will illuminate how his sexuality, faith, artistic interests and perceptions of masculinity—combined with his dedication to the civil rights movement—shaped his writing and enduring legacy. Also view the Brilliant Exiles: American Women in Paris, 1900-1939 exhibit at the museum. Dine on your own at the museum.
