The Smithsonian’s National Portrait Gallery and Smithsonian American Art Museum have jointly acquired Sir Isaac Julien’s impactful installation Lessons of the Hour (2019). This work uses period reenactments across five screens to vividly portray 19th-century activist and philosopher Frederick Douglass (1818–1895). Julien blends critical research, fictional reconstruction and poetic imagery and sound to emphasize Douglass’ enduring lessons on justice, abolition and freedom. Additionally, explore the Felix Gonzalez-Torres: Always to Return exhibit, which delves into the artist’s engagement with portraiture, identity and the narratives of history and inheritance.
